Hello. Who are we speaking with and what’s your role in Mightiest of Guns?
I’m Brett Marshall, singer and guitarist.
You’re launching the video for the excellent ditty Sawtooth Knife at The Old Bar on Friday January 29. Tell us about the song and the film clip for it.
The song was inspired by the legends surrounding Big Micajah Harpe’s death. After he and his cousin had raped, robbed and murdered their way around colonial America, a posse finally got revenge, tracking the ‘brothers’ down, shooting Big Harpe in the back and hacking off his head, while Little Wiley Harpe escaped. According to the myths, his last words were delivered mid-decapitation. They then nailed his skull to a tree.
What kind of research did you undertake in order to effectively depict Micajah Harpe’s story?
I became addicted to a bunch of old books about the Wild West. Most of them contradict each other, but it was the brutality of this myth really stuck with me – where this evil bastard, mean to the end, gets his comeuppance.
If Sawtooth Knife was to be used on a film soundtrack, who would direct the film and what would the synopsis be?
Directing? David Cronenberg. A Western horror revenge flick with no hope of redemption in sight.
The launch at The Old Bar is shaping up to be a huge night. You’ll be joined by Eaten By Dogs and Swamplands. What’ll these bands bring to the night?
Eaten By Dogs claim to be the greatest band in the world, and we believe they are correct. Swamplands will be bringing the hillbilly filth that we all need.
