Stay Gold’s final farewell: grizzly metal, angsty emo and a big month-long send-off

Stay Gold
words by staff writer

It is with a heavy heart that we bring you the final few weeks of programming at Stay Gold.

The end is near – the iconic Sydney Road haunt Stay Gold is shuttering its doors at the end of June. But don’t fret, there are still plenty of chances to have a boogie and pay your respects!

This month, alongside two massive goodbye parties to wrap things up, the venue will be hosting the last-ever show of pop punk band Paperweight, two huge metal bands coming over from the US, a triple bill of British underground hip hop legends and so much more.

Plus, they’re even giving away the iconic neon sign! To find out how you could win it and find out about all of the fun goodbye gigs at Stay Gold, read on.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around Melbourne here.

Heists are back at Stay Gold to drop their brand new single Lights Out and turn the room into a heavy mosh pit. Joined by Bad Juju, Liar and Soulsleep, this stacked night of emotionally charged metalcore is the perfect way to kick off the weekend. The boys have been on a tear lately, so this release show is bound to go off.

Taking Back Saturday

Doors open at 11pm for this 18+ throwback sesh where the classics from the golden era will be blasting until the wee hours. Perfect for anyone wanting to scream along to old favourites and dance the night away.

An Ode to Stay Gold

Lost Soul Bookings presents this heartfelt celebration of everything Stay Gold stands for in the heavy scene. Best mates (and lovers) Ned, Ethan, Bec and Van are bringing their ripper rock ’n’ roll sound to Stay Gold for a rip-snorting launch of Young Life. Pulling from blues, psych, proto-punk, country and straight-up Australiana, these four have been tearing up stages since their debut album and sold-out tours. With special guests TBA, this is the perfect way to kick off the last month at the beloved Brunswick venue.

Gore metal kings Exhumed are back in town to absolutely decimate Stay Gold with their signature blend of grind, death, and pure filth. Expect a night of open road chaos as one of the scene’s heaviest hitters brings the riffs and the rage with new album Red Asphalt, a tribute to vehicular manslaughter and grizzly accidents on the great American roadway.

After six incredible years, Paperweight are playing their final-ever show at Stay Gold. This one’s extra emotional as it’s not just a band farewell, but also a send-off to the venue that’s been their home since the early days. If you’ve ever sung along to their punchy punk-pop-emo bangers, come through and do it for the last time in person.

ORIGIN

Brutal American tech death legends Origin are returning to smash Stay Gold with their ultra-precise, face-melting insanity. If you’re into lightning-fast riffs, guttural vocals, and drumming that defies physics, this is your night. It’ll be their first time in the country in over a decade.

am//pm emo night

In their last ever edition at Stay Gold, this party will see Nightlight, Closure and Headstrong play live, with emo, pop-punk & rock DJs spinning ‘til late. It’s the big sad banger farewell party, so get your black eyeliner on, scream every word, and dance like the venue’s closing (because it is).

Future Static are teaming up with Tapestry for a massive co-headline night at Stay Gold. Joined by Saving Face and 50fifty, this stacked bill is set to deliver heavy progressive riffs and emotional metalcore anthems in true Brunswick fashion. It is going to be one loud and chaotic Sunday evening that the Melbourne heavy scene will not want to miss.

These US gore merchants bring the filthy, sludgy, bowel-shaking death metal that’s been blowing up with special guests PeelingFlesh and Algor Mortis. Added due to demand, this extra date is gonna be nasty in the best way – don’t sleep on it.

Press Club

Grevillea and Great Australian Bank are supporting Press Club as they turn up the volume for one of the final farewell nights, delivering their massive, anthemic rock and punk energy. After all the debut gigs and sold-out nights they’ve had here, it’s only right they help send the place off properly.

Antiskeptic are back to smash through their classic album Memoirs of a Common Man in full, celebrating 25 massive years in one of the sweatiest, most loved Brunswick bandrooms. Joined by reunited legends Wishful Thinking and local faves Drastic Park, this will be an emotional send-off wrapped in nostalgia and loud guitars.

STAY GOLD: TO THE END

Future Static, Ocean Grove, and other yet-to-be-announced friends are coming together for the big one – a massive closing celebration with scene heavyweights, limited enamel pins for the first 100 through the doors, and that legendary neon sign up for raffle. Come say goodbye to eight years of memories, mosh pits, and cold drinks at one of Brunswick’s best.

STAY GOLD FINAL NIGHT

Oh, you thought they were done? Not quite yet. This is it — the absolute last hurrah at Stay Gold. The Stay Gold All Stars are taking the stage for one final time, smashing through My Chemical Romance’s The Black Parade in full before ripping into a stack of greatest hits. Joined by Aurateque and Some Heard Trouble, with DJs spinning emo, rock, punk and alt bangers all night (plus plenty of special guest spots), it’s gonna be a sweaty, sticky send-off.
