The festival was set to span both digital and in-person screenings in 2021, but the recent lockdown has meant it has shifted solely online.

The 2021 Setting Sun Film Festival has just begun, offering cinephiles over 80 films on demand. The beloved local Melbourne festival was scheduled to be a hybrid event this year – spanning both digital screenings and those in person – but given the recent lockdown and with cinemas only able to operate up to 25 per cent capacity, it has shifted solely online.

Going down from now until Saturday June 26, punters will be able to access the Setting Sun Film Festival via nine film sessions. Program A comprises three paid sessions and encompasses the films that were scheduled to take place in person at Yarraville’s Sun Theatre.

Here, audiences will be able view the Opening Night Program (Golden Sunset), the female filmmakers’ Rouge Program and the Greek Psarokokalo program – a special suite of films from the Psarokokalo International Short Film Festival in Athens. Audiences can purchase one session for $10 or three sessions for $20.

Program B is free and comprises six sessions – The Banksia, The Dahlia, The Lilith, The Bridge, The Footscray Flapper, and the Rising Sun Youth session sponsored by Victoria University.

The Setting Sun Film Festival is enjoying its eighth instalment in 2021. It’s become a beloved event on the calendar, offering film lovers and beyond a culturally-diverse program year after year, one that reflects the reality of Melbourne’s western suburbs and Australian society.

The Setting Sun Film Festival takes place from now until Saturday June 26. Plan your Setting Sun journey here.
