Recorded by Tom Iansek (Big Scary) under reportedly trying conditions, There We Stand is a bombastic melodic rock tune with a distinctly Australian voice. Tim Jedwab’s unsteady vocal is part of it – his youthful strains and earnest mutterings have an unmistakable local accent – but the steady swirling verse and fevered chorus reminds me of eighties Oz icons like The Triffids or the Hoodoo Gurus, and nineties bands like Pollyanna and Ammonia. It’s a tidy, well-constructed song, but there’s something a little backward and parochial about it.
