Aamir Khan’s appearance marks a major coup for the festival. The legendary actor, whose four-decade career includes Oscar-nominated Lagaan and record-breaking Dangal, will be celebrated with a comprehensive retrospective. The highlight promises to be a screening of his latest film Sitaare Zameen Par, which follows a basketball coach mentoring a team of neurodivergent adults, followed by a live conversation with Khan himself.
Beyond the star power, the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne showcases the full spectrum of contemporary Indian filmmaking. Opening night features Berlin International Film Festival standout Baksho Bondi, while closing night presents Cannes sensation Homebound from director Neeraj Ghaywan.
Special events include the beloved flag hoisting ceremony at Federation Square on 16 August, where Aamir Khan will lead Independence Day celebrations, followed immediately by the high-energy Remitly IFFM Dance Competition. The festival also dedicates 22 August to LGBTQIA+ voices with special screenings and a Bollywood Pride Party.
