Hop Nation Brewing Co. has given its core range a new look and added The Ghost Hazy Pale, and five readers can win a case.
Hop Nation’s latest is called The Ghost Hazy Pale, and the name tells you how long a can should last.
The Footscray brewery released The Ghost Hazy Pale on 26 October as part of a redesign of its whole core range. It comes in at 4.2%, pours dry and bright, and carries a heavy hop load over the soft, rounded body that regular Hop Nation drinkers will know well. Lighter in alcohol than most of the hazies in the fridge, it’s pitched squarely at warm afternoons.
Until now, most people have pictured Hop Nation as the green brand, and green meant J-Juice, its hazy IPA. Plenty of drinkers never made it past that can to the rest of the lineup. Every beer in the core range now has its own colour, with J-Juice keeping the green. The Ghost goes orange, The Heart Pale Ale gets teal, the Draft Lager is blue and The Chop IPA is purple. A strip of tasting icons runs across the top of each can, so you can get a read on the flavour before you open it.

Beat has teamed up with Hop Nation to hand out five cases of The Ghost. Each of the five winners takes home a full case, which should cover a good chunk of the warmer months.
The new cans are the work of Damian Kelly at DKD, a designer whose drinks clients include Stone & Wood and Granite Belt Cider Co. Kelly kept the bones of the existing branding and refined them, adding a clearer set of colours and symbols the brewery can use on shelves, taps and anywhere else a Hop Nation logo turns up.
Hop Nation has been brewing in Footscray since 2014 and is still independently owned and run. Anyone who wants to see the full colour-coded range in one place can drop into the taproom on Whitehall St, where The Ghost is already pouring.
