The band use public domain footage from old Popeye cartoons for their latest release.
On the back of recently releasing their new single, ‘Six Monkeys’, Melbourne indie pop’n’roll mainstays Even are back with a film clip to accompany the track.
Providing listeners with a nostalgic trip, the band – comprising singer/guitarist Ash Naylor, drummer Matt Cotter and bass player Wally Kempton – incorporates the cartoon classic of Popeye into a cool and fun-filled visual that accompanies their sparkling new jangle-pop track.

Using public domain footage from old Popeye cartoons, the video marries the band’s latest hypnotic masterpiece with the jovial animation, imitating the bobbing to the music that the characters did in the early cartoons. With their full-bodied heavy hitter as the narrative, the band use has essentially recreated the 1936 two-reel animated short episode ‘Popeye the Sailor Meets Sindbad the Sailor’ into a fun and nostaglic slice of timeless power pop.
As one of the earliest animated characters, introduced in 1933 by Fleischer Studios, Popeye has become one of the most enduring and iconic cartoon characters of all time, so it’s almost perfect that the enduring band have opted to release this clip.
Having been together for an astonishing 25 years with seven studio albums to their name and an eighth set to be released later this year, the band continue to make their presence felt. The band will be launching the single with a series of gigs across Australia dubbed the ‘Even Save… Even Save The Queen’s Birthday Weekend’, which was rescheduled in the wake of Melbourne’s latest lockdown.
The band will now take to the stage in August, kicking off at Espy, St Kilda on Friday August 27; before hitting up Hotel Westwood in Footscray on Saturday, August 28; a matinee show at the Northcote Social Club on Sunday, August 29 and a nighttime show the same date at Leadbeater Hotel in Richmond. These will be shows you don’t want to miss.
