Tones and I to play sold-out bushfire benefit in small-town Victoria

Words by staff writer

Tones and I will headline a sold-out bushfire recovery concert in the small regional Victorian town of Longwood.

The Tones and I Goes to Longwood concert hits the Longwood Reserve on 7 March, with $5 from every ticket purchased going directly to the Strathbogie Disaster Relief Fund. Organised by a local community committee, the sold-out gig has been put together to support communities and emergency services affected by recent bushfires across the region. The event is expected to draw thousands of visitors into the area and channel funds back to fire-impacted towns.

The Victorian government confirmed it will help cover the costs of staging the concert through its Regional Events Fund. The program supports festivals, sporting events and art exhibitions across regional Victoria, with the aim of creating local jobs, boosting tourism and putting a spotlight on communities beyond Melbourne. Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos made the announcement on 6 March.

The concert forms part of a wider push to drive visitors back to the region following a difficult bushfire season. Beyond the gig itself, the government has flagged ongoing marketing, public relations and social media campaigns aimed at encouraging travellers to explore fire-affected communities across regional Victoria. The Strathbogie area and surrounding towns have had a particularly tough summer, making community-led events a key part of the recovery effort.

Over the past 12 months, regional events backed by the fund have pulled in more than a million attendees across the state and generated upwards of 300,000 hotel nights. Recent acts to grace regional stages include Good Charlotte performing in Bendigo, Ballet Under the Stars lighting up Horsham and Lenny Kravitz in Mildura.

The Victorian government has now supported more than 450 events across regional Victoria through the fund. Upcoming highlights on the regional calendar include the Lost Trades Fair in Woodend, Grampians Grape Escape and Nightide in Queenscliff.
