‘Tis Pity She’s A Whore

One of the world’s greatest but rarely performed stories begins at the Malthouse Theatre next month.

Rehearsals are now in full swing at the Malthouse Theatre for new artistic director Marion Potts’ own adaptation of ‘Tis Pity She’s A Whore.

John Ford’s controversial four-hundred-year-old play is sure to match the heat of Melbourne in February, and is already causing quite a stir!

A notorious play that’s more often banned than performed, ‘Tis Pity tackles the most taboo of subjects: the incestuous love of a brother and sister. Beautiful young Annabella (played by recent VCA graduate Elizabeth Nabben) has many suitors, but none compare to her elder brother Giovanni (rising star Benedict Samuel).

When these two star-cross’d siblings dare to requite each other’s love, they forge a dangerous and youthful revolt that tests the boundaries of what can be said, what to believe and who you can love.

With a set taking inspiration from cult tv series The Wire, this tumult of vengeance, calumny and slaughter is set to be an eyebrow-raiser even for the most jaded of contemporary audiences.

The season begins on February 11 and continues until March 5. Tickets are on sale now at malthousetheatre.com.au, and prices range from $21–$55 +bf.

‘Tis Pity She’s A Whore is a heady tale of lust, power and revenge – and can’t end without passions erupting and a significant body count. As the first Malthouse Theatre production for 2011, ‘Tis Pity will be one of its most unforgettable.
