Tim Scanlan & Mana Okubo settle into Edinburgh Castle for a September residency built on globe-spanning sounds and plenty of improvisation.
At the centre of it is Tim Scanlan’s one-man-band setup, stitching together harmonica, guitar and foot percussion into something far bigger than a single player should be able to manage. The result pulls from Celtic, reggae, Balkan and Quebecois traditions, folding old-world melodies into modern beats and leaving room for the kind of loose, in-the-moment detours designed to get a floor moving.

Edinburgh Castle has quietly become one of Sydney Road’s go-to rooms for live music, running gigs seven days a week alongside a full kitchen. The residency lands in that mix as a low-key, no-fuss way to end the week, with the bar open late and the music kicking off at 8pm.
There’s plenty happening around it too, with the pub also flagging Father’s Day bookings on 6 September, a free pint or glass of wine and live music from 4pm. For the residency itself, though, the draw is simple: one player, a stack of instruments and a sound that hops continents without leaving the front bar.
