The concert features two distinct programs, with the first running from 7:45pm to 8:30pm and including Pateras’s Pyrocumulus and Guffond’s Approaching Chaos. The second program from 8:50pm to 9:40pm showcases Tarozzi and Walker performing Canti di Guerra, di Lavoro e d’Amore (songs of war, work and love).

Tarozzi (voice and violin) and Walker (voice and cello) will present their contemporary reinterpretation of female folksongs from their birthplace, the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy. These songs originated in the early 20th century and World War II era, with melodies and lyrics that have transformed through oral transmission across different social, working and historical contexts.

The pair share a long-standing artistic partnership spanning almost 20 years, during which they have explored different musical forms through collaboration with composers and improvisers including Philip Corner, Rhodri Davies, Eyvind Kang, Nathalie Forget, Frantz Loriot and Alex Bruck. Their work focuses on acoustic qualities, new tuning possibilities and innovative sound techniques.

Pateras’s Pyrocumulus, composed in 2023 for violin, cello and acousmonium, will be presented in eight channels with Tarozzi and Walker performing while Pateras handles diffusion. The piece was premiered on the GRM acousmonium at the 2023 Akousma Festival, Maison de la Radio, Paris.

Guffond, whose work intersects social, political and technical infrastructures, will present Approaching Chaos. Her artistic practice encompasses live performance, recording, sound installation and custom made browser add-ons. Through the sonification of data, she addresses the potential of sound to engage with contemporary political questions and engages listening as a situated knowledge practice.

Both artists have significant international profiles, with Guffond having performed at major electronic music and art festivals including CTM festival in 2020, while Tarozzi and Walker have collaborated with renowned composers Éliane Radigue, Pascale Criton and Philip Corner, creating numerous highly reputable works.

Silvia Tarozzi and Deborah Walker appear with support from Ater Fondazione.
