Sungazer marks a new era for the Melbourne four-piece

Sungazer reflects nearly two decades of evolution, blending The Temper Trap’s signature anthemic sound with fresh experimentation. The album veers from electronic textures and dancefloor energy to guitar-riffing indie tunes and introspective crescendos — all anchored in Dougy Mandagi’s expansive, instantly recognisable voice.

The band previewed this new direction late last year with single Lucky Dimes, a heavy, distorted cut that drummer Toby Dundas described at the time as a deliberate attempt to shake expectations. Tracks like Giving Up Air and the title track Into the Wild continue that trajectory on the forthcoming record.

From Sweet Disposition to a sold-out comeback

The Temper Trap first broke through with their 2008 debut single Sweet Disposition, which became a UK top 10 hit and embedded itself in Australian music history. Their debut album Conditions achieved multi-platinum success in Australia, while follow-ups The Temper Trap (2012) and Thick As Thieves (2016) both debuted at number one on the ARIA charts.

The band completed sold-out east coast headline shows in 2025 and have since been announced as support for Muse’s North American tour, alongside festival sets at Outside Lands in San Francisco and Summerfest in Milwaukee. The September–October dates mark the first chance for Australian fans to hear Sungazer live.

For a band whose live performances at iconic Melbourne venues have long been considered unmissable, these Temper Trap headline shows represent both a reinvention and a homecoming — and with a decade of new material to unpack, they’re shaping up to be among the most anticipated gigs of the year.
