The Ring in Concert is heading to Melbourne with a live orchestra

Words by staff writer

The Ring in Concert is bringing a live orchestral horror experience to three Australian cities this October and November.

Presented by TEG Dainty and Paramount Pictures, The Ring in Concert will screen Gore Verbinski’s 2002 psychological horror classic on the big screen while a live orchestra performs Hans Zimmer’s score in real time. Sarah-Grace Williams will conduct all three performances, guiding the musicians through the film’s unsettling compositions in perfect sync with the on-screen action.

The film follows journalist Rachel Keller, played by Naomi Watts, as she investigates a mysterious videotape rumoured to kill anyone who watches it within seven days. Released by DreamWorks Pictures, The Ring helped reshape modern horror and remains one of the most recognisable psychological thrillers of its era.

Each city will feature a different orchestra taking on the score. The Metropolitan Orchestra Brisbane will perform at the Brisbane date, The Metropolitan Orchestra handles Sydney, and the Australian Pops Orchestra brings it home at the Plenary in Melbourne.

Zimmer’s score takes a stripped-back, minimalist approach, leaning into psychological tension rather than loud, traditional horror cues. In the original soundtrack’s liner notes, the composer described the music as essential to the film’s creeping sense of dread and pervasive atmosphere. A live performance adds a new physical dimension to an already deeply unsettling cinematic experience.

General public tickets go on sale 6 May at 11am local time.
