Joey Silveira is launching his debut single at the Bergy Bandroom this week

Words by staff writer

Pop-rock newcomer Joey Silveira drops his debut single Drown and follows it with a Brunswick launch show on 15 May.

The Naarm/Melbourne songwriter is joined at Bergy Bandroom by folk artist Ruby Dattner and atmospheric rock quartet Paradise Valley. Joey Silveira’s songwriting moves between pop-rock and psychedelic detours, with folk threads and bigger ballads peppered throughout. Influences span the contemporary, in Coldplay and Jeff Buckley, and the classic, in Pink Floyd and Fleetwood Mac. The mix of references is part of what gives his sound its through-line of familiarity alongside something distinctly current.

Drown is the first official release in Joey Silveira’s catalogue, a layered, contemplative pop-rock track that builds gradually toward its peak. His songwriting tends to dwell in interior territory before reaching for moments of quiet euphoria. The 15 May show is being staged as an immersive evening, with lighting and atmosphere shaped around the music itself rather than acting as a backdrop to it.

Direct support comes from Ruby Dattner, the folk artist bringing honest, witty songwriting to the bill. Melbourne four-piece Paradise Valley round out the lineup, the band pairing dynamic instrumentals with material that leans into themes of love and connection.

Bergy Bandroom is a familiar stop for emerging Melbourne acts working across rock, pop, indie and beyond. Silveira’s bill brings together three distinct sonic styles for the night, with his own pop-rock writing acting as the connective tissue throughout.

The recorded version of Drown is available now via major streaming services. The 15 May show will be its first proper Melbourne airing in front of an audience, with Joey Silveira fronting his full band on the night.

Tickets to the show are on sale now via Oztix at $22.95. Doors open at 7:30pm and the gig runs 18+ unless accompanied by a guardian.
