The Great God Mogadon

Presented by Don’t Look Away, a company dedicated to reviving classic Australian works, The Great God Mogadon continues this tradition and gives the audience a very smart and witty interpretation of Australian politics.

Originally written as a radio play by Barry Oakley, Mogadon tells the story of Edward Searle, a balding, 40-something, absolute nobody trapped working in the public service. A knock on his front door one day changes all that and suddenly Searle is told he must become the Prime Minister of Australia. Of course such an honour must come with a downfall and Searle is very quickly running for his life after an assassination attempt.

Performed by a dynamic and fantastic all female cast (Jennifer Innes, Ciume Lochner, Tara Rankine and Emma Smith), the four women swap seamlessly between characters and work together in perfect unison to form a tight chorus of storytelling that takes great delight at poking fun at our current political system.

Director Philip Rouse is definitely making his mark as a director to watch. His fascination with politics and feminism means Mogadon, along with past shows that Rouse has directed, is more than just a play and rather a fascinating and biting critique into the landscape of Australian politics and the treatment of women politically, publicly and privately.

Mogadon is a slick, strong and entertaining show that packs an amazing amount into 45 minutes.
