The German Film Festival opens this year with Stasikomödie (A Stasi Comedy), which follows a man living a double life as an underground poet and Stasi agent. The Festival Centrepiece this year is Der Passfälscher (The Forger), appearing direct from its Berlinale premiere – a true tale of a Jewish graphic artist in 1940s Berlin who forged IDs to help himself and hundreds of others.

To celebrate the 50 year anniversary of the Goethe-Institut in Australia, they’re bringing five outstanding films to the cinema from the last five decades, including Lola Rennt (Run Lola Run) and Die Blechtrommel (The Tin Drum). This year’s German Film Festival will take place at participating cinemas, which includes Palace Balwyn, Palace Brighton Bay, Palace Cinema Como, The Kino, Pentridge Cinema and The Astor Theatre.

“Together with Palace, we are pleased to once again present the latest German films to Australian audiences,” states Simone Baumann, the Managing Director for German Films. “The colourful collection of German comedies, dramas and films about German history will be a special experience for all fans of German cinema this year thanks to the presence of director Franziska Stünkel.”
