The Age Music Victoria Awards Announce Genre Winners, Reveal Nominations

“Not many states in the world have such a depth of talent in so many different genres to even justify a Genre Awards,” pointed out Music Victoria CEO Patrick Donovan. “These bands are the best of the best, and you can see them play at your local venue seven nights a week.

“Awards play an important role by recognising artistic achievements and giving a leg up to the most deserving acts, while acting as a filter for fans seeking out the best new music.”

The industry event, at The Age Media House, saw performances by Wagons and TEK TEK Ensemble.

The genre winners were:

Best Blues Album:  Greg Dodd & The Hoodoo Men’s 3am Blues Live.  

Best Country Album: Lachlan Bryan & The Wildes’ Black Coffee.

Best Soul, Funk, R&B and Gospel Album: Cookin’ On 3 Burners’ Blind Bet.

Best Jazz Album: Anton Delecca Quartet’s The Healer.    

Best Hip Hop Album: Briggs’ ShepLife.

Best Electronic Act: Chet Faker.

Best Heavy Album: Ausmuteants’ Amusements.

Best Indigenous Act: The Deans.

Best Global or Reggae Album: Black Jesus Experience’s Migration.

Best Folk Roots Album: Charles Jenkins’ Too Much Water In The Boat.

Best Experimental/Avant-Garde Act: Evelyn Morris.

In recognition of all the artists’ contribution to Victorian music, all nominees in the genre awards receive a free rehearsal/pre-production package at Bakehouse Studios. Winners in each category will also receive a ten hour recording package. 

Nominees for The Age Music Victoria Awards, which will be held at 170 Russell on Wednesday November 19, was led by Total Control with three mentions. Other multi-nominees were Missy Higgins, Dan Sultan, Courtney Barnett, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Teeth & Tongue, Client Liaison, Cosmic Pyschos and D.D Dumbo.

The list of categories are:

Best Album: Dan Sultan’s Blackbird, HTRK’s Psychic 9-5 Club, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard’s Oddments, Teeth & Tongue’s Grids and Total Control‘s Typical System.

Best Band: Client Liaison, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Teeth & Tongue, Total Control and Wagons.

Best Song: Banoffee (Got It), Courtney Barnett (Avant Gardener), Fraser A Gorman (Book Of Love), Laura Jean (My First Love Song) and Total Control (Flesh War).

Best Male Artist: Chet Faker, Dan Sultan, Mikelangelo, Rob Snarski, Vance Joy.

Best Female Artist: Courtney Barnett, Jen Cloher, Jess Cornelius (Teeth & Tongue), Laura Jean, Missy Higgins.

Best Emerging Artist: Banoffee, Client Liaison , D.D Dumbo, Milwaukee Banks, Remi.

Best Live Band: Cosmic Psychos, Graveyard Train, Harmony, King Parrot, Saskwatch.

Best Venue: 170 Russell, Melbourne; Cherry Bar, Melbourne; Corner Hotel, Richmond; Howler, Brunswick;  The Forum Theatre, Melbourne.

Best Festival :Boogie, Falls Festival, Golden Plains, Laneway Festival, Meredith Music Festival.

Best Regional Venue: Barwon Club, Geelong;  Bridge Hotel, Castlemaine; Hallam Hotel, Hallam; Karova Lounge, Ballarat;  Meeniyan Town Hall, Meeniyan.

Best Regional Act: Briggs, Cosmic Psychos, D.D Dumbo, Freya Hollick Stonefield.

Daddy Cool and the late Ed Nimmervoll will be inducted to The Age Music Victoria Hall of Fame.

The Age Music Victoria Awards are the largest publicly voted awards in Australia with an average of 80,000 votes. $5 from each ticket on the night are donated to the musicians’ charity Support Act Limited.
