Three of Melbourne's pre-eminent indie acts are combining for one helluva show at the Brunswick Ballroom next Thursday June 16.

Stevie Jean is a Northern Territory export – one of the finest musical talents to come out of that region in modern times – who has relocated to Melbourne and is now garnering major mainstream attention for her phenomenal songwriting nous. A teenage prodigy of sorts, Jean began releasing original tracks by 14-years-old, and now still only 22, has released her celebrated debut album The Dark.

Influences on that record include the era-spanning likes of The Doors to Lana Del Rey and The Black Keys, and the crux of her evolution as a songwriter has been evolving beyond teenage angst into deeply-interwoven themes that she explores across a diverse range of genre nods.

What you need to know

  • Melbourne locals Stevie Jean, Carousel Club and Ellis King are playing a combined gig
  • They’ll light up the Brunswick Ballroom on Thursday June 16
  • The three acts span a huge range of indie influences and genres

Check out Melbourne’s most comprehensive gig guide here.

She’s played festival stages from The Hills Are Alive to Party In The Paddock and BIGSOUND, not to mention taking home NT Best Live Voice at the National Live Music Awards in 2017 and 2018, so she’ll be the night’s headliner along with her backing band, but audiences will also revel in the opportunity to catch Carousel Club and Ellis King on the bill.

Carousel Club are a six-piece jangling indie-pop band that have previously played the Ballroom’s sister venue Brunswick Artists’ Bar alongside fellow Squinked Records resident King, and they’ll likely be familiar to keyed-in Brunny residents anyway after winning over fans with their self-described combination of looping guitar sounds, layering over sun-dappled synths, mixed with catchy melodies fluttering overhead. Like Jean, Carousel Club have also won fans over on triple j, and have also nabbed a slot at The Hills Are Alive.

King, meanwhile, is originally from Tassie but moved to Melbourne at the ripe old age of nine, and has since become a songwriting specialist that dabbles in pop, folk and indie. She lists an all-star lineup of HAIM, Sarah Blasko, Holly Humberstone and Isabella Manfredi among her influences, and with very little available online as of yet, here’s your chance to discover a hidden gem.
