Following today’s news that the Victorian Government will contribute $55.4 million to the $83.1 million redevelopment project, the library has revealed its plans for the future.
Scheduled to be completed over a five year period, the project will renew Queen’s Hall to include a rooftop garden terrace and create new centres for digital media, entreprenurship and an e-Town Hall initiative to connect regional public libraries across Victoria.
Along with reopening the library’s entrance on Russell Street, the redevelopment will also create new exhibition spaces as well as brightly coloured education and learning facilities for kids.
It’s a project that’s been a long time in the making for the hallowed Melbourne landmark, which is also Australia’s busiest public library, clocking 1.8 million visitors each year.
