The Gatwick has been a place where countless of Melbourne’s citizens on the verge of homelessness have found refuge, but is also well known as a hotbed of crime – much of it bloody and violent.
Housing Minister Martin Foley said The Gatwick has “passed its prime as a place that housed vulnerable people in safe and appropriate circumstances,” The Age reports.
The closure comes in the wake of pressure to shut the Gatwick down, with local traders expressing safety concerns and Liberal MP Margaret Fitzherbert lodging a formal complaint.
In an interesting twist, reports also emerged that The Block was in negotiations to secure the property for renovation as part of their TV show.
Throughout its history, The Gatwick has played host to crime scenes with incidents reported to police including rape, murder, burglary and beatings.
The 64-room hotel has issued vacancy letters to tenants and will no longer take bookings.
