St Kilda Film Festival is celebrating 35 years of storytelling

If there was one thing you were expecting from St Kilda Film Festival, it probably wasn’t the union of SKFF and Guanajuato International Film Festival, Mexico’s largest film fest. And yet it’s 2018 and here we are; a flaming hot cheeto is in charge of the free world, cricket is actually interesting, and SKFF is partnering with GIFF to bring some of the best emerging cinematic talent from Latin American down under. It’s unexpected but beautiful, so get around SKFF from Thursday May 17 – Saturday May 26.

In conjunction with this partnership, SKFF is proud to present international guest Nina Rodriguez, GIFF’s Director of Programming. In attendance, you will have the opportunity to meet Rodriguez and pick her brain – ask her about the international film festival circuit, or the future of short films. After all, she is an expert in her field so why not take advantage of the opportunity for a chat?

Despite the GIFF partnership, SKFF is still placing emphasis on the Australian experience, and aims to shine a light on Australian industry icons and moments otherwise unseen. David Batty will reflect on 35 years of filmmaking in remote indigenous Australia, and the National Film and Sound Archive will present Right There On My TV; an opportunity to revisit the music TV programs of the 1970s.

In case this was all sounding too serious, family friendly screenings of heart-warming films will be presented throughout the festival. Wholesome content tailored for children and adults alike, SKFF will showcase films from both the SKFF and GIFF catalogue.

Of course, there’s no use knowing that all of these cool events are happening if you don’t have anywhere to stay. Thankfully, SKFF has secured an accommodation partner; Rydges St Kilda is right in the heart of St Kilda, and only a few minutes from St Kilda beach and Acland Street.

Keep an eye out for further events announcements – this is just a small snippet of what is going to be on the calendar. Gear up, organise yourself, and be prepared to celebrate a mixture of local and international talent.
