Southbank’s getting a green makeover with grassy tram tracks, new bike lanes and more

As outlined in the City of Melbourne’s 2017-18 draft budget, $35 million will be committed across three years to a project set to overhaul Elizabeth Street and Southbank Boulevard with organic fertility – science says people are happier with grass and natural floras around them.

With Vienna and Vancouver biting at our heels for the title of the world’s most liveable city, action is needed and this announcement will go some way to reaffirming our dominance.

An entire lane of Southbank Boulevard will be refurbished with an open greenspace – 1.2km of new bikes lanes, public art spaces and tram tracks covered in grass… Yes, that’s not a lie.

The dream is to open opportunities for medium scale music festivals to envelope the area and embellish the scenery at the foot of the Victorian College of the Arts.
