The Harpoons : Do You Want My Love?
A joyous concoction of R&B-inflected throwback pop, Do You Want My Love? builds upon previous Harpoons single Ready For Your Love with similar themes, heartened by a big step up in production. It’s been a live favourite for a length, the studio version doing the song justice with resplendent choral backing harmonies emanating from the clouds. Heaven on the dancefloor.
Forces : Run
Around half a decade ago, Forces commanded a presence throughout Melbourne with their direct, almost pugilistic, techno. They’ve since made the pilgrimage to Berlin, with new six-track 12-inch Newbody, the duo’s first definitive missive since 2013’s self-titled EP. Opening track Run picks up where we left off, machine gun snares signalling powerful builds into sheer physicality.
Slum Sociable : Don’t Come Back Another 100 Times
There’s potency in Slum Sociable’s well-placed faith in vocal-led songwriting on Don’t Come Back Another 100 Times, somewhat diminished with a skittish dissonance resulting in a busy signal. Less oscillation and more melody would help the potential emotion break free. There’s still worth in the compelling opening, and the noodling guitar solo coda.
Beaches : Void
Not a moment of hesitation precedes the blast of Krautrock in Void, unrelenting in its pursuit as it switches on the afterburners, ascending stratospherically. One of those tracks where time stands still, a real ride. New album Second Of Spring is out this September.
