Single Of The Week

Marlon Williams ft Aldous Harding : Nobody Gets What They Want Anymore

Former partners, and two of New Zealand’s brightest talents, unite on record for the first time on ‘Nobody Gets What They Want Anymore’. Melody is utilised as a devastating weapon, Williams and Harding cultivating synchronicity and mutual detachment as they engage in golden era folk-pop mastery. After unison, solitude engulfs the coda. Stark beauty shows hints of unravelling at the seams. A precision-guided knock to the ticker.

West Thebarton : Bible Camp

There’s risk when an entire song goes full tonk that a lack of dynamism could skittle the wickets, but ‘Bible Camp’ relishes a depth while never going easy. The chorus cry of “I’ll paint the sky blue for you” is an absolute belter. The cathartic release is pure.

Sarah Blasko : Phantom

A gnarly synth-line is subdued just enough to retain a sense of danger, threatening to erupt out into a full-blown romp. Sarah Blasko exudes control, manifesting a brilliant light show behind a smokescreen. New album Depth Of Field due out Friday February 23.

Eminem ft Beyonce : Walk On Water

For his Revival, Eminem goes the route of Dr Dre’s ‘I Need A Doctor’ late-career introspection – replete with a Skylar Grey penned hook, sung here by Beyonce. Unlike Dre on ‘I Need A Doctor’, Eminem doesn’t rap like fucking garbage. Still, the conceit of self-reference stifles, rather than emboldens, with the closing jab of “Bitch, I wrote ‘Stan’” inviting an unbecoming comparison, giving up on achieving those heights again, asking fans to settle for less.
