Words by Staff Writer

Buzzcocks are coming to Australia this October before playing Northcote Theatre on November 2.

Formed in 1976 by singer-guitarist Pete Shelley and singer-songwriter Howard Devoto, Buzzcocks quickly became pioneers of the punk movement with their energetic and fast-paced sound.

The band’s early lineup consisted of Pete Shelley, Howard Devoto, Steve Diggle on guitar, Steve Garvey on bass, and John Maher on drums. Their debut EP, “Spiral Scratch,” released in 1977, is considered one of the first independent punk records, setting the stage for the DIY ethos that would define the punk movement.

Buzzcocks gained widespread recognition with their 1978 debut album, “Another Music in a Different Kitchen,” which featured iconic tracks like “I Don’t Mind” and “What Do I Get.” The band’s distinctive blend of catchy melodies, raw energy, and Shelley’s introspective and often humorous lyrics set them apart in the punk scene.

One of Buzzcocks’ most well-known songs, “Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve),” released in 1978, showcased their ability to combine punk aggression with pop sensibilities. The song remains a classic and has been covered by numerous artists over the years.

Despite initial success, Buzzcocks faced internal conflicts, and Devoto left the band in 1977, leading to the arrival of Steve Diggle as the second guitarist. The band continued to release influential albums like “Love Bites” (1978) and “A Different Kind of Tension” (1979) before disbanding in 1981.
