San Cisco feel like a band who are right on the verge of making it big. After releasing new album The Water, this tour was perfect for staking their claim as the undisputed best thing going in the Aussie indie scene (and there’s a lot of competition).
Their set was a healthy mix of old and new, with most of the new album getting a run, alongside some old favourites. The band played with an easy-going feel, no one doing too much or jumping about all over the place. The easiest going member was easily frontman Jordi, who sashayed onto the stage, sashayed around the stage and then sashayed away.
While San Cisco could be criticised for having a lot of their songs sound the same, they still managed to own it. The songs were all bright and poppy (even the sad ones) which worked with the happy coloured lights and the backdrop of palm trees against a summer sky. Everything this band touched exudes bright colours and happiness.
Popular tracks such as About You and Too Much Time Together got predictably loud reactions from the crowd however there was also a lot of love saved for newer material, with an acoustic singalong version of Waiting For The Weekend a surprise highlight. The crowd were clearly loving the show with the moshpit mostly a sea of raised hands and swaying bodies, with people belting out the words.
San Cisco are an easy band to like. Everything about them is upbeat and poppy and you can’t help but find yourself dancing along. While they’re still a long way away from being a truly ‘big’ band, they’re definitely on the way. With their breezy group demeanour and their ever growing list of cheery indie songs for people to dance along to, it seems the only way is up for the Fremantle foursome.
Highlight: Fred Astaire. What a song.
Lowlight: Do you really need to video entire songs? You aren’t going to watch them.
Crowd Favourite: Too Much Time Together.
