Rufus Wainwright announces first new pop album in eight years

Unfollow The Rules marks Wainwright’s ninth studio album.

Rufus Wainwright returns with his first new album, outside of his opera endeavours, in almost a decade. Titled Unfollow The Rules, the record album is set for release in April and marks the next chapter in Wainwright’s career.

The record draws from his experiences as a husband and father as well as exploring themes of love, loss and getting older. Broken up into three acts, the album will contain 12 songs in total.

Wainwright has also released the second single from the album, ‘Damsel In Distress’. He describes the track as a homage to Joni Mitchell after recently being introduced to her music by his husband. The single comes on the back of last year’s ‘Trouble In Paradise’.

“My husband and I now live in Laurel Canyon. I wasn’t that familiar with Joni’s music but Jörn became obsessed and took me on a journey into her music,” says Wainwright of ‘Damsel In Distress’.

“We ended up hanging out with her and I get now why she’s one of the greats. So it’s part Laurel Canyon, part a song about a personal relationship that I’m trying to come to terms with, but mostly my Mitchell virginity being broken.”
