One Underworld set is a big night out. The Melbourne headline show at PICA in March comes with two.
Live Nation and Secret Sounds announced the Underworld tour on 21 October. Rick Smith and Karl Hyde will play headline shows at Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane on 2 March and Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion on 3 March, then land at PICA in Port Melbourne on 6 March. Each headline night features two separate sets from the duo. The run comes off the back of Crazy, Crazy, which premiered in New York in September.
Festival crowds get a look in too. Underworld kick things off at Electric Avenue in Christchurch on 27 February and play WOMADelaide on 5 March. Victorians with stamina can turn it into a weekend, since the PICA show falls the night before the duo’s Golden Plains set in Meredith on 7 March.

Tickets for the three headline shows go on general sale at 12pm on 27 October. Mastercard holders and anyone registered for the artist presale get first go, with both presales opening at 10am on 23 October and closing at 10am on 26 October. A Live Nation and Secret Sounds presale follows at 11am on 26 October and runs for 24 hours, while Spotify’s presale opens at 1pm that day and wraps at 11am on 27 October. All times are local.
This year has kept the pair busy. Their Boiler Room debut pulled more than a million views in its first five days, and the latest reissue of their first seven studio albums sent all seven straight to the top of the album charts, something the promoters say no single artist had done before. Smith and Hyde have also been working with a younger crop of producers, including Brutalismus 3000, Kettama and KI/KI.
Underworld have been at it for more than 40 years. Their 1994 album dubnobasswithmyheadman made the name, and Born Slippy (Nuxx) picked up a second life when Trainspotting put it in front of a whole generation in 1996. Expect a few people at PICA who were there for both.
