RocKwiz's Very Merry Christmas arrives at Hamer Hall on 17 December, after 10 years of Easter-only duty.
The live spin-off of the music trivia show has spent the past decade setting up at Arts Centre Melbourne over the Easter long weekend for RocKwiz’s Really Really Good Friday. RocKwiz’s Very Merry Christmas is the festive counterpart, built specifically for the Hamer Hall stage, with host Julia Zemiro and quizmaster Brian Nankervis running proceedings.
The format stays largely intact. Seasonal songs and deliberately tricky questions make up the bulk of the night, backed by official house band The RocKwiz OrKestra, with Dugald tallying the scores by hand as usual. The musical special guests stay under wraps until they walk out on stage, and contestants are pulled from the audience in the Hamer Hall foyer before doors, so there’s no signing up in advance.

Names who have turned up as surprise guests at previous RocKwiz live shows include Leo Sayer, Kate Ceberano, Kutcha Edwards, Billy Bragg, Emma Donovan and Kate Miller-Heidke. None of that guarantees anything about December, since the whole point is that nobody knows who’s coming until the lights go down.
A few practical details worth knowing before you book. The show runs for two hours and 15 minutes, there’s haze in the venue, and adult language is a possibility. Arts Centre Melbourne doesn’t recommend it for anyone under 12 unless they already know the show and what it involves.
