Words by staff writer

Fed Square's RESET festival returns this September with sustainability workshops, art installations and community events.

The month-long program runs from 1 September to 6 October, offering free family-friendly activities focused on environmental awareness and creative expression. RESET festival brings together interactive workshops, immersive experiences and community connection opportunities across Melbourne’s cultural heart.

RESET festival features diverse programming including muddy play sessions, eco-discos, outdoor cinema screenings, textile mending workshops and seed propagation activities. The festival aims to encourage sustainable living practices while providing engaging entertainment for all ages, from young children to seniors.

The festival opens with Nocturnal Worlds, a sound installation transforming Fed Square’s Atrium into an immersive sonic environment featuring Australia’s nocturnal creatures. Visitors can experience haunting sounds from Powerful Owls, Green Sea Turtles and Long-Finned Eels while relaxing in designated chill-out spaces.

A major highlight includes the Planting Party on 7 September, featuring morning tree planting at nine Melbourne locations through Landcare Victoria partnerships. The afternoon celebration at Fed Square includes Wurundjeri Welcome to Country ceremonies, live music from The Orbweavers, gardening talks and seed propagation workshops.

Artist Sangeeta Sandrasegar presents a significant textile installation titled I ragazzi dei millefiori: the flow’rs of song and story, created in partnership with the Australian Tapestry Workshop. The suspended artwork features silk organza and cotton panels dyed with natural plant materials, incorporating botanical illustrations and archival imagery referencing Italian flower sellers and cultural migration themes.

Family activities include the popular Big Toy Swap on 2 October, Earth Children sculptural workshops from 20-23 September, and Mini Beast Disco running 30 September to 2 October. The Zero Waste Festival returns on 6 September with repair cafes, clothes swaps and sustainable food options.
