Section 8 will mark World Hip Hop Day on 10 August with (always free, always fire) live performances and DJ sets from local legends.

The celebration honours the 52nd anniversary of DJ Kool Herc’s legendary party that gave birth to hip hop culture. Section 8 Melbourne has organised a comprehensive World Hip Hop Day event featuring multiple artists and entertainment elements to commemorate this pivotal moment in music history.

World Hip Hop Day at Section 8 Melbourne will showcase live performances from Cool Out Sun and Ejip, alongside DJ sets from multiple artists including Mizhap, Antagonize, No Era, Mz Rizk and PANTOME 448C. The iconic container bar has partnered with Kaiju Beer and Tequila Tromba for the annual cultural commemoration, creating an atmosphere that reflects the community spirit central to hip hop culture.

The origins of hip hop can be roughly traced to 11 August 1973, when 18-year-old DJ Kool Herc performed at his sister’s back-to-school party in the recreation room of 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx. Herc’s revolutionary approach involved isolating the instrumental “break” sections of funk records and using two turntables to extend these percussive intervals, creating what he called the “merry-go-round” technique. This innovation formed the foundation of breakbeat DJing and led to the emergence of “b-boys” and “b-girls” – dancers who performed to these extended breaks. From this modest community gathering, hip hop has evolved into a global cultural phenomenon, with contemporary celebrations like Section 8’s World Hip Hop Day continuing to honour the genre’s foundational principles of community engagement and artistic innovation.
