Putting Art Into The MGA Sculpture Park

One of Australia’s most popular art galleries, the Monash Gallery of Art (MGA) is encouraging artists to get creative and take part in its public sculpture competition.

As part of the Gallery’s 21st birthday celebration next year, one lucky artist will be granted $50,000 to fund the design and fabrication of a landmark new public artwork for the MGA Sculpture Park.

Entries for the competition open on November 21 with proposals due by February 2011. The project is anticipated to be finished in June next year to go along with the 21st birthday festivities.

Monash Mayor Charlotte Baines said the competition would enable artists to express themselves and have their sculpture on permanent display in one of Melbourne’s leading art districts.

“2011 will be a special year for the MGA and a very special sculpture to mark the anniversary will be a great addition to the already impressive works that stand in the Sculpture Park, “ Cr Baines said.

“The MGA is home to some truly fantastic artwork. Already the sculptures on display receive a lot of attention and admiration and this is the first time we are throwing it open for artists from all over Australia to submit their works in a competition format.”

MGA director Shaune Lakin said he hoped the competition would draw many gifted artists with a range of different styles.

“Proposals will be sought from artists for a sculpture that will engage visitors and make a meaningful contribution to the park as a cultural place. There is no predetermined theme or subject for the sculpture, however, it must be sympathetic to the site,” Dr Laken said.

If you want to get creative and are interested in entering the competition, or want to find out more information about the MGA, contact the gallery on 8544 0500 or visit www.mga.org.au.
