Port Fairy Folk Festival turns 50 with massive first lineup drop

Port Fairy Folk Festival
words by staff writer

Port Fairy Folk Festival is about to throw the party of the decade — literally.

Port Fairy Music Festival, the beloved south-west Victorian institution, has unveiled its first wave of artists for a 2027 event that marks five whole decades of music by the sea.

Held annually over the Labour Day long weekend, Port Fairy Folk Festival started back in 1977 and has since grown into one of the most respected folk gatherings on the planet, pulling in artists and crowds from every corner of the globe.

Despite the international reputation, the festival has stayed true to its roots, built on community, connection and a shared love of music that’s been passed down through generations of families who keep returning year after year.

The first lineup announcement for the golden anniversary is a stacked one, blending homegrown talent with acts travelling from Spain, Canada, Ireland, Scotland, England and the US.

Leading the charge is John Butler with his full band, joined by fellow Australians Mia Dyson, Kutcha Edwards, Mick Thomas’ Roving Commission, The Settlement and We Mavericks.

The international contingent is just as strong, with Kate Rusby and Grace Petrie travelling from England, Daoirí Farrell and Joshua Burnside making the trip from Ireland, Scottish acts Dlù and Skerryvore rounding out the Celtic representation, and Spain and Catalonia’s Alosa bringing a distinct flavour to proceedings.

The Burning Hell are heading over from Canada, while the US contingent includes The Milk Carton Kids, and Tim Easton, with Eleanor McEvoy completing the line up from Ireland.

Tickets have already sold in record numbers within the first week of release, a sign of just how much affection people hold for this milestone celebration.

Festival Program Director Justin Rudge said the milestone year was a chance to honour everyone who’s helped shape the event since the late seventies, describing the lineup as a mix of returning favourites and first-timers making their debut trip to Port Fairy.

Many of the punters who once danced barefoot at the festival as kids are now bringing their own children and grandchildren along, turning the event into a genuine multi-generational tradition.

Organisers have confirmed this first reveal is only the beginning, with more artists, anniversary events and archival throwbacks set to be announced in the lead-up to March.
