Chunky Move turns Melbourne Town Hall into a laser-lit experiment this August

Words by staff writer

Dance company Chunky Move has unveiled Time Remaining, a new work where laser light, winches and dancers share the stage.

Created by Chunky Move Artistic Director Antony Hamilton, Time Remaining premieres at Melbourne Town Hall on 19 and 20 August, part of the City of Melbourne’s Now or Never festival. Hamilton sets his choreography against scanning beams of light and motorised winches that send suspended objects gliding through the room.

The piece treats those mechanical systems as performers in their own right, drawing human bodies and machine control into the same space. The cast features Madeleine Bowman, Melissa Pham, Samakshi Sidhu, Lee Serle, Jayden Wall and Jareen Wee.

Time Remaining

  • Melbourne Town Hall — 19 August, 6.30pm and 8.30pm
  • Melbourne Town Hall — 20 August, 6.30pm and 8.30pm

Sound and video artist Nick Roux and lighting designer Nicholas Moloney shaped the work’s technical world, while costume and material design comes from longtime Hamilton collaborator Paula Levis. Her designs nod to performers of earlier eras, casting the dancer as a figure under pressure from advancing technology.

Now or Never runs from 19 to 30 August, the City of Melbourne’s festival built around art, ideas, sound and technology. This year’s program sits under the theme A Whole New World, examining how immersive tech, AI and digital storytelling are reshaping culture, with Elise Peyronnet curating.

Co-led by Hamilton and Kristy Ayre, Chunky Move has spent more than 30 years making contemporary dance that resists neat labels. The company has toured to 130 cities and 150 festivals, reaching audiences of more than 610,000. Recent Hamilton works for the company include Yung Lung, You, Beauty and U>N>I>T>E>D.
