The indie-jazz outfit have just released ‘JUST KIDS / DEVOCEAN’.
If the cold winter weather has you nostalgic for warmer weather, then Melbourne-based group OUTTATIME has you covered.
The indie-jazz five-piece have just released their new double single, ‘JUST KIDS / DEVOCEAN’, marking their first release for the year. Track one, ‘JUST KIDS’, is inspired by Patti Smith’s titular autobiographical novel, and delves into new love and all its naiveties, while ‘DEVOCEAN’ dives deep into unpredictable relationships, explored through the metaphor of a love for the ocean.

Catalina Richardson’s soul-infused, nostalgic vocals combine beautifully with the lo-fi instrumentals of both tracks – a fusion that surprises, radiating with rawness and relatability allowing the songs to stay with you after the listen.
OUTTATIME takes inspiration from musicians such as Alice Phoebe Lou, Mac DeMarco, Nai Palm and Gorillaz for their double single, which is set to be the first of a collection of “ambient soaked, funk filled, psychedelic melancholy tunes” being released throughout 2021.
Founded by Richardson, a singer-songwriter who’s been circulating the Melbourne music scene since 2019, playing as a keyboardist and back-up singer in six-piece surf-rock band The Fillmores, ‘JUST KIDS / DEVOCEAN’ comes after OUTTATIME released a string of singles in 2020. The first of which was OUTTATIME’s debut single, ‘my love,’ – a heartfelt song exploring the “strain and undeniable joy” of long distance relationships.
“Cat has this innate quality of opening herself up to new concepts,” co-producer/mixer and friend of Richardson, Jamie Carolan, says. “Her open mind means that her process is constantly evolving. That energy is really exciting to be around.
“Her creative process is always forward moving which has taught me not to dwell too long on the past or on songs I’m writing. We’ve been collaborating for a few years now and we always have discussions about ‘what’s next’.”
