The best musicians to follow on social media

best musicians to follow on social media
Words by Eva Marchingo

Social media is the perfect platform to connect with your favourite artists, find out more about them and get sneaky insights into their musical process.

Following your faves on social media means you can catch up on all they’re getting up to when you can’t physically go to gigs, festivals or events. There are heaps of funny, insightful and inspiring Australian musicians to follow online to keep your spirits high and get your music fix. Here are some of our favourite accounts.

Best All-Rounder

Memphis LK

Artist, producer, vocalist, DJ, fashion icon – what can’t Memphis LK do? Her Instagram boasts beautifully shot photos of her live performances and day-to-day life. You’ll also find sneaky TikTok videos hiding in there, too. If you head over to her TikTok account, you’ll see her hilarious takes on trends including ‘how I walk when I see…’ and a ‘night time routine’. Her twitter is another place where her quick and dry wit comes out. When she heard about new social-distancing rules she posted, “One thing I am really missing right now is playing spontaneous games of stacks on”.

Cub Sport

Cub Sport are one of those bands that give you pretty much everything you need. Feeling blue? Listen to their stripped back version of ‘Confessions’ on IGTV. Need cheering up? Check out their ‘Miss and Eve’ highlight. Need to feel connected? You’ll see the only cover that matters on their feed too, as the band spearheaded a cover of The Veronica’s ‘Untouched’ featuring Tkay Maidza, Vance Joy, and Mallrat, amongst so many others. The independent alt-pop group gives you a daily dose of heart-warming goodness and hilarious adventures.

Best Twitter

Kira Puru

She’s voracious, matter-of-fact, and she has a healthy obsession with Australian Survivor. It’s the perfect Twitter account. You may already know Kira Puru as the woman who – with notable success – called upon Australian radio stations to exclusively play Australian artists while coronavirus is impacting the music scene. You can find her posting her own hot takes, and curating a feed of some of the best tweets from other people. Her feed is equal part humour, poignant messaging, reality TV, and insightful dialogue about the current climate.

Best TikTok

Allday

With only 12 videos to date this is a big call – but be assured, this account is quality over quantity. Allday’s soft-grunge rap and laidback attitude has earned him a slew of fans including the dreamy Japanese Wallpaper, and Brisbane cool-girl Mallrat. Allday’s TikTok videos are dry, experimental, and include the self-deprecating humour he’s known for. Be careful when you watch his ‘Penne’ TikTok – you’re going to wish the song he made for it was a full-length single. Other highlights include the one where he’s making a cup of tea – including a cameo from Memphis LK – and his rendition of ‘Truth Hurts’ by Lizzo.

Wholesome Accounts

Didirri

This Melbourne-based artist never fails to mend broken hearts while warming our souls more than chicken-soup ever could. His Instagram is carefree, gentle, and full of aesthetically pleasing posts. Didirri’s humble nature comes through in all his stories – including live stories, which he’s promised to do more of in the coming months. It’s the best place to be when you’re ready for a feel-good cry.

Kaiit

She’s the 2019 ARIA Music Award winner for Best Soul/R&B Release who isn’t shy about sporting show-stopping makeup. Kaiit is an eclectic and ferocious musician with an Instagram account to match. Whether you’re looking for fashion inspiration or a bit of soul, she’s got it all. Between doing live makeup applications, creating IGTVs about her hair, or posting magical shots from her shows – her account will always hype you up.

Giulia Giannini McGauran

We’re putting Giulia Giannini McGauran on this list because she’s the woman behind the colour-pop photography of Tones & I, Cry Club and The Rubens. Her brilliant photography skills have seen her work with incredible international artists, such as Dua Lipa, and on big-time projects for Instagram and Facebook. She’s the person to follow if you’re looking to add some fun and brightness into your life. You’ll also find a bunch more musicians to follow through her posts.
