The Astor Theatre presents a special treat on Sunday night, with a double feature made up of two of Orson Welles’ most acclaimed films
The Astor Theatre presents to you a fantastic piece of movie history with their special Orson Welles tribute.
Screening on Sunday January 9 at 7pm, the tribute to this well-accomplished director, producer and filmmaker is a double-feature of two of his most acclaimed films, The Magnificent Ambersons and Citizen Kane.
First up is the gorgeously photographed The Magnificent Ambersons (1942), adapted from Booth Tarkington’s novel. Welles’ second directorial feature is a sweeping saga of a prominent, wealthy family’s attempt to adapt to the changing times at the close of a decadent age. The spoiled young heir to the decaying Amberson fortune comes between his widowed mother and the man she has always loved.
Ensure you stick around after intermission for perhaps one of the most famous films of all time – and for what is surely one of the greatest screen treats you could ever have.
It’s not without good reason that Orson Welles’ critically acclaimed masterpiece Citizen Kane (1941) continues to make its way onto just about every "best of" cinema list even today. Considered one of the most innovative films in the history of cinema, Citizen Kane showcases groundbreaking formal techniques in cinematography, editing, and even narrative modes of storytelling.
Telling the fictional story of newspaper magnate Charles Foster Kane (also played by screenwriter/director Orson Welles) but based heavily in reality and paralleling the real life of William Randolph Hearst, Citizen Kane charters a rags to riches tale, and his then ruthless pursuit of power within the publishing world.
Both films are screening as they were originally released – in 35mm print format!
Head to the Astor Theatre this Sunday night. Tickets are $14 for the double feature. It starts at 7pm, don’t be late!
