Melbourne-born international opera star Danielle de Niese will perform her only Australian solo concert this year.

Danielle de Niese will showcase contemporary opera and personal favourites in Melbourne next month.

The internationally acclaimed soprano returns to her hometown for the first time in eight years, performing at Elisabeth Murdoch Hall on 8 August. As an International Ambassador for the Australian Contemporary Opera Company, Danielle de Niese has championed the evolving face of opera throughout her career, bridging traditional and modern audiences through innovative performances.

The Melbourne-born artist first entered the spotlight as the youngest winner of Young Talent Time at just nine years old, before making her professional operatic debut at 15 with the Los Angeles Opera. Her meteoric rise has seen her perform on the world’s most prestigious stages, including the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House and La Scala.

The concert will feature two distinct halves, with Danielle de Niese performing alongside the Ormond String Quartet, harpist Marshall McGuire, oboist Rachel Curkpatrick, pianist Coady Green, and the ACOCO Rising Artist Ensemble. The first half showcases new works written specifically for the soprano, while the second presents her personal desert island selection accompanied by stories from her extraordinary career.

The Australian-American lyric soprano’s breakthrough came with her captivating performance as Cleopatra in Handel’s Giulio Cesare at Glyndebourne Festival in 2005, which catapulted her to international stardom and secured a multi-album deal with Decca Records. Since then, she has maintained successful recording and Broadway careers alongside her opera performances.

The Australian Contemporary Opera Company has served as Australia’s home of contemporary opera since 2009, bringing acclaimed international artists to local audiences while supporting bold local talent. The organisation creates fresh programming designed to invite new audiences to experience the art form.

This special concert marks a rare homecoming for Danielle de Niese, offering Melbourne audiences the chance to experience both contemporary opera and the music that shaped her artistic journey, spanning from John Denver to George Gershwin.
