words by staff writer

Nigerian-British artist Obongjayar is bringing his sophomore album Paradise Now to Australia and New Zealand next year.

Obongjayar hits six cities and festivals across February and March, including headline shows in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne alongside festival slots at Electric Avenue in Christchurch, Golden Plains and WOMADelaide. It follows a big year for the artist, who played his first US headline shows and festivals including Newport Folk Festival and Coachella.

Born in Lagos and raised in Calabar before moving to London at 18, Obongjayar blends electronic, soul, pop and afro-beat into something distinct. His thoughtful, emotionally open songwriting has led to collaborations with Little Simz, Pa Salieu and Fred Again, who sampled Obongjayar’s I Wish It Was Me for adore u, racking up hundreds of millions of streams globally.

Paradise Now arrived earlier this year to critical acclaim, cementing Obongjayar’s position as an artist working outside easy genre classifications. His 2022 debut Some Nights I Dream of Doors earned praise from W Magazine, Vice, i-D, The Guardian, NPR and DIY, while his earlier work including God’s Own Children earned him an Ivor Novello award.

New single Give Me More dropped alongside the announcement of Paradise Now & Forever, a deluxe version of this year’s album arriving 20 November. Produced by Yeti Beats, who’s worked with Doja Cat, the track opens with rich percussion before building into something joyous and uplifting despite the vulnerability in Obongjayar’s lyrics.

Tour kicks off with Electric Avenue Festival in Christchurch before moving through Australian capitals and wrapping at WOMADelaide. Golden Plains appearance on 7 March slots neatly between Melbourne and Adelaide dates, giving Victorian audiences two chances to catch him across that weekend.

Pre-sale tickets go live Monday morning with general sale following Wednesday. Six dates across Australia and New Zealand between late February and early March.
