New Melbourne live music venue The Count’s announces jazz-filled program

The Count's has just dropped its live music program from September to November with jazz, swing, electronica, soul, funk and a dash of comedy songwriting on the bill.

Following a smashing winter series that saw revered Australian musicians come through its doors, Monash Performing Arts Centre’s state-of-the-art club The Count’s has revealed the lineup for their upcoming spring series, running September 7 until November 9.

Expertly programmed by Melbourne music maestro Chelsea Wilson – a name familiar to Melbourne music fans from her programming excellence at Brunswick and Stonnington music festivals, among others – the 170-capacity velvet-curtain-lined club hosts a smorgasbord of jazz and contemporary music programming every Wednesday night, plus special Saturday events throughout the season.

New Melbourne music venue The Count’s opens with riveting live program

Kicking things off on September 7, critically acclaimed jazz artist Monique diMattina appears in her New Orleans gangsta jazz band Monique & The Dopamine- performing originals, 1920s stomps, and George Gershwin’s epic, iconic ‘Rhapsody in Blue’.

ARIA nominated and internationally renowned saxophonist Angela Davis presents her original jazz with her trio with Tony Gould (piano) and Sam Anning (bass) on September 14.

With influences from Bjork to Anoushka Shankar, beloved Punjabi-Australian vocalist Parvyn Singh will bring her own blend of electronica and jazz influenced by Sikh devotional music and classical Indian music and dance to The Count’s on September 24.

Ultrafox will bring an atmosphere of elegant swing and exuberant, dynamic dance-tempo jazz to The Count’s for a special performance with vocalist Julie O’Hara on September 28.

Melbourne Funk band The Bamboos take off their suits and go instrumental as The Firemen! on October 5, and Henry Manetta and the Trip will delve deep into their back catalogue of brilliantly eclectic blues-drenched soul and jazz on October 12.

Jake Mason Trio will bring the hammond soul-jazz sound to The Count’s in the spirit of Jimmy Smith and Brother Jack McDuff on October 19, and soul-funk six piece Mayfield will serve up a delicious combination of sonic flavours on October 26.

Multi-award winning singer, songwriter and comedian Jude Perl brings her musical comedy show, Participation Award to The Count’s on Saturday October 29. An exploration of bullying and our school system, featuring Jude’s unique brand of stream-of-consciousness style song writing, Participation Award begs the age-old question – why does school suck so much?

Closing out the season, jazz-soul ensemble Cannonball take the stage with vocalist Chantal Mitvalsky on November 2, and Ethiopia’s Girma Yifrashewa performs with members of Melbourne-based JAZmaris on November 9.
