MTC return to help kick start High School theatre nerds’ careers.

In year 11? Well in 2011, the Melbourne Theatre Company are inviting 25 students a once in a lifetime opportunity to join their peers behind the scenes, inviting them to watch a production a month, and join in some lively critical discussion about what’s going on in Melbourne theatre.

Suzie Thomas, MTC’s Education Manager, will also be hosting a swathe of guest speakers to talk about their professional experiences, good and bad.

One strange note is their "special effort to interest boys in theatre, and to explore areas of theatre other than acting, such as writing and design." While I understand the unjustified concept that young men are reluctant to take part in theatre (is there a a study or something?), it feels a little soon after the Company B controversy in 2009 to suggest it is the men that are underrepresented in theatre.

Time will tell whether this gamble is an astute observation on gender balance or yet another return to the boys’ club.
