Motorboat: New feminist clown-burlesque extravaganza docks at Clocktower Centre

Batten down the hatches and prepare your portholes for Melbourne's most bizarre and body-positive theatrical experience this autumn.

A raucous, feminist clown who’s part woman, part boat is about to make waves at Moonee Ponds’ Clocktower Centre in a show that defies categorisation. Motorboat combines physical comedy, burlesque and pure absurdity as the titular character embarks on a nautical journey of self-discovery after her engine dies at sea.

Directed by award-winning theatre maker Sharney Nougar, known for Two Little Dickheads and Smashed Arvo, this outrageous production pushes boundaries by artfully blending clowning techniques with striptease for a thoroughly unique theatrical experience.

The 50-minute show comes with content warnings for mature themes and sexual references, with organisers recommending audiences be 18+ to attend. But for those ready to dive into something completely different, Motorboat promises to deliver a wild ride unlike anything you’ve seen before.

“Come aboard for a wild ride of self-discovery, silliness and stupidity,” says McGlensey, whose character must navigate increasingly ridiculous scenarios throughout the performance.

The Clocktower Centre continues its tradition of hosting boundary-pushing content with this latest addition to its 2025 season. With tickets ranging from $25 for members to $30 full price, the show represents excellent value for those seeking alternative entertainment options in Melbourne’s north-west.

Accessibility has been considered, with wheelchair spaces available by booking via phone on 9243 9191, though patrons should note that non-members will incur a $4 transaction fee regardless of booking method.

The performance forms part of a broader season of drama and comedy at the venue, sitting alongside other upcoming productions including Spellbound: A Night of Magic and Grand Illusion and Flemington Theatre Company’s Murder Before Me.

In keeping with Motorboat’s irreverent spirit, audiences are advised to come with an open mind and ready for laughs. The show’s body-positive message wrapped in nautical nonsense offers a refreshing take on physical comedy that celebrates rather than denigrates the human form.
