The campaign was started last month by radio hosts Anthony “Lehmo” Lehmann and Brigitte Duclos from Gold FM. They’re pushing for a laneway near the Forum Theatre. But others in the music industry have said that given his long time high profile and contribution to Australia, he should be honoured with something more significant like Meldrum Road or Meldrum Parade.
Doyle has said the idea is a good one. According to Lehman, Meldrum is cool with the idea as long as the laneway was a place where the homeless and runaways could meet in safety.
Meldrum, who published his memoirs The Never, Um, Ever Ending Story, was recently inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.
The policy of the Department of Transport, Planning and Local Infrastructure is that someone has to be dead before they get a laneway honor. However, the City of Melbourne can request a one-off exception.
Meldrum is the hottest tip to get a laneway honour, with online bookmaker sportsbet.com.au pricing it at $4. He’s in front of Bert Newton ($6), Shane Warme ($7), Kylie Minogue ($8) and John Farnham ($10).
