Mobile Myki will be officially rolled out to Melburnians this week

iPhone users will have to wait a little longer though.

The battle between Android and iPhone users is one as old as time itself. However, there’s one extra thing Android users can soon wave in the faces of their iPhone-holding enemies: they’ll no longer have to carry a Myki around with them.

On Thursday March 28, the Mobile Myki option will be available to use via the Google Pay platform, meaning Android users will be able to use a ‘digital Myki’ on their phone. Public transport users can top up, touch on and off, check their balance and view their travel history using the program. The Mobile Myki will be available for full fare, concession, child and senior Mykis. The official rollout of the program comes after an initial trial last year, followed by a secondary trial earlier this year.

If you’re looking to get your hands on a digital Myki, you’ll need to have an Android phone with at least Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and NFC functionality. It might take a little longer for iPhone users to ditch the plastic though, with no set timeline for when Mobile Myki will be available on Apple Pay.
