Five new Metro Tunnel stations will be the most accessible train stations in Victoria.
Arden, Parkville, State Library, Town Hall and Anzac stations have been designed to meet diverse passenger needs across the network. Wide platforms, braille signage, tactile ground surface indicators, hearing loops and accessible toilets including Changing Place facilities are available for passenger use.
Step-free access from street level with both escalators and lifts will support passengers of all abilities, including those using mobility aids or prams. Platforms have been designed to maximise independent boarding, with Metro Trains staff available to assist if required.
Parkville Station will have Travellers Aid on hand to deliver a free travel companion service for passengers with mobility needs. This service helps with navigation or provides wheelchair support for those connecting to and from the nearby hospital precinct.
Metro Tunnel represents the biggest transformation of Victoria’s rail network in 40 years, doubling the size of Melbourne’s underground rail system and paving the way for more trains, more often.
From Sunday, public transport will be free every weekend for every Victorian until Sunday 1 February, when the new Metro Tunnel stations will be fully integrated into the wider network as part of the Big Switch.
Greater accessibility across public transport makes it easier for more people to move around the city smoothly, safely and independently. Having these features built into the stations from the ground up means passengers with additional needs can navigate the network with greater ease.
