TESSERACT VOCALIST QUITS
Seeing Periphery tour this year was an important day for me, ‘cos I realised how I much I don’t actually like Periphery. What was even more important was that I got to see TesseracT on that tour, and I realised how absolutely fucking phenomenal TesseracT are. Which is why I fell into deeply pensive sadness when they announced that vocalist Daniel Tompkins had quit the band this week. If you’ve heard their debut One and especially if you just saw this guy live, you’ll know why that really, really sucks. He’s gone off to play pop music, of all things, and the band haven’t wasted any time: Sky Eats Airplane throat Elliot Coleman is his replacement.
THE RETURN OF SANCTUARY
So whaddaya do when half of your band up and leaves? If you’re Nevermore vocalist Warrel Dane, you bring Sanctuary back to life with a new album. “I think the record is going to be called, The Year The Sun Died. And there’s a lot of stuff playing into that, and you can read whatever you want to for right now into it. God, that song is really good. We’ve been working really hard on that.”
While we’re on the topic of new albums, when asked if there’ll ever be another Nevermore record, Dane was quick off the mark: “Oh yeah.”
METALLICA AND LOUD REED, TOGETHER AT LAST
This seemingly insane double-up album courtesy of Metallica and Lou Reed now has a concrete release date, and that release date is Monday October 31. I know, I’m morbidly curious, too. Thing is it’ll probably be the best thing Metallica have done in years. That’s not saying much, really. Yeah yeah, you’re a massive fan-boy and now you’re mad, blah blah, fuck off.
KITTIE GONNA DROP SIXTH ALBUM
I don’t know about Kittie. I’ve never really known about Kittie. Are these girls a bit yeah? Would you? It really depends on what angle and under what specific lighting conditions you catch Morgan Lander at, really. They used to have the hottest bass player when they started up, though. That Talena Atfield. Damn, I rubbed my adolescent well dry over that one back in the day. Anyway these hags are still making second-rate metal, and they’re coming out with I Failed You in Tuesday August 30. Just saw their second recording diary for it. Looks as shit as the last one.
TEXTURES GET IN
I can’t sing the praises of Textures’ upcoming newie Duality enough. It’s really something and yeah, new vocalist Daniël de Jongh comps Eric Karlsbeek – ie. One of Metal’s Greatest Vocalists Ever, Yes Mate – a lot better than most fans will be expecting. Pre-album proof is in their first music video for the track Reaching Home, which you can shake your face to over at revolvermag.com. Trust me, best thing you’ll do with the rest of your life.
ALONE AND CRAZY: ICS VORTEX
ICS Vortex is the craziest guy. I interviewed him once when he was still in Arcturus, and it was stupid. We climbed trees together, went for a whizz. Maybe that’s why he’s never in any one band for very long, Don’t suppose he a gives a single hoot, really, seeing as he’s just debuted yet another howling mad track from his upcoming solo effort, Storm Seeker (came out this week!). Worried Elliot Coleman can’t fill those Dan Tompkins-sized shoes in TesseracT? Check out youtube.com/user/JamboxLive and hit up the vid simply entitled, ‘TesseracT’. That’s Coleman’s first live appearance with the guys, having a go at Concealing Fate, Part 1 – Acceptance. Mind the epileptic light spazzing, but also mind the fact that he’s kind of average. Bit good at jumping around, though, points for that Mario dance he’s got going on.

Textures – Silhouettes [2008|Listenable]
They’ve got Dualism coming out soon and that’s a big deal, what with Eric Karlsbeek dropping out of the band after they released Silhouettes. Ah, Silhouettes. Fuck this album is good. You want to hear some of the most tremendous vocalising the roiling sphere of metaldom has ever been privy to? Check Messengers. I feel faint.
