Melbourne’s Playback allows emerging producers to hear their tracks on a club sound system

Words by Sam Beros

How can you tell if your music bumps on club speakers, without having access to club speakers?

Jaime Sacchero and Alex Clayton provide a solution to this problem so exclusive to producers, and in the process, have created a one-of-its-kind event in Playback.

Described as an open mic night for electronic music, Playback is a new Melbourne-based initiative built around giving producers an opportunity to play their unfinished tracks in a public setting through professional-level club systems, allowing up-and-coming artists to properly understand how their sounds come across in the spaces they’re designed to be heard in.

Playback: Series 3

  • Wednesdays 1 March, 5 April, 3 May & 7 June 2023
  • The Gasometer Hotel: 484 Smith St, Collingwood, Victoria
  • 8pm start time, 2.5 hour run time
  • Entry by donation

The initiative has seen eight sold-out events over two seasons thus far, and all accounts point to the upcoming third season sharing similar success.

Much of the hype has come from Playback’s ability to capture the up-and-coming: artists such as Polito, Majella, Desilva, Slow83 and Monikr have premiered demos at Playback only to have them blow up, seeing releases from labels including Butter Sessions, Inverted Audio, General Merchant, MESS Ltd and DMO. With each new event, its reputation grows as a launchpad for the sounds of the future; a place to witness the magic early.

Part of this must be attributed to Sacchero and Clayton’s history as artists themselves. Between their understanding of the creative mindset, and the value they hold for community and access, Playback’s events make welcome both emerging and experienced producers. They are committed to keeping Playback a safe space to learn, one that gives a voice to the musicians that may not have had the chance to be heard before.

Electronic aficionados can get their fix of the future when Playback returns for its third season on Wednesday, March 1 at The Gasometer Hotel. Submissions for Season 3 are now open.
