MMW has announced the State Library of Victoria will serve as the event’s Hub, converting the renowned and prestigious location into a heaving celebration of live music.
“State Library Victoria is a perfect backdrop for this year’s Melbourne Music Week Hub,” said Lord Mayor Robert Doyle. “It will provide a unique experience inside one of the city’s most recognisable buildings and reinvent the space from its traditional use into a vibrant live music venue.”
MMW will once again open up some of Melbourne’s most spectacular hidden spaces with the State Library’s original reading room, Queen’s Hall, set to host many of MMW’s marquee performances and acting as the main performance space in the Hub. The majestic, column-lined room hasn’t been open to the public for more than 10 years and is scheduled for renovation, providing the only opportunity to experience the space for years to come.
On top of all this, MMW has also dropped details of their Opening Night – a smashing all-female lineup at Queen’s Hall on Friday November 11. Her Sound, Her Story: A Celebration of Women in Music, will showcase performances from Julia Stone, Ella Hooper, Mama Kin, Montaigne, Mojo Juju, Ecca Vandal, Elizabeth Rose, Airling and Nyne.
The Drones will also be getting in on the action, with a super special performance at Melbourne Town Hall on Sunday November 13 using the city’s famed Grand Organ.
On the same day, the MCG will be transformed into a mini-festival which will include performances in off-limits locations like the player change rooms, the new Robert Flower Terrace and the edge of the turf itself. A mix of Melbourne musicians playing everything from smooth jazz to upbeat pop will set the scene, before main stage performances from local legends The Delta Riggs and Pierce Brothers take over.
