Introducing Penny’s.
Iconic Melbourne live music venue The Penny Black is set to reopen in July, bringing with it a new look and a new name. Now called ‘Penny’s’, the venue is currently enjoying a revamp, with a new beer garden, interior and Japanese-leaning menu in the works.
What’s perhaps most interesting is the venue’s new broader concept. Welcome To Brunswick, the venue adjacent to Penny’s but facing the street behind, plans to turn the space into a food and booze precinct by connecting Brunswick Mess Hall, Little Mess, Mr Burger and Penny’s, making it an expansive social wonderland for weekend adventures.

News of Penny’s emerged via fresh Facebook and Instagram pages for the venue, as well as a post on the Welcome To Brunswick Facebook page, which gave a bit more of a hint on what to expect, suggesting that punters will be able to walk between the Frith St watering hole and 420 Sydney Rd.
It’s also expected the arrival of Penny’s will also signal the return of live music to the space. An iconic bandroom over the years, The Penny Black was a regular hotspot for live music.
Prior to the venue temporarily closing due to COVID, it hosted everyone from RAT!Hammock to Fenn Wilson, Teenage Dads, Elle Shimada, KYE and more. The Penny Black was also known for hosting legendary day parties, often welcoming prominent DJs into its space to perform special sideshows or DJ sets.
The likes of Floating Points and Marcel Dettmann have performed at the space, while locals such as Boogs, Sunshine and Spacey Space have also jumped behind the decks on a number of occasions.
