Big Build projects are ramping up in Melbourne this spring with major weekend closures planned on the Eastern Freeway.
Victorian government crews are preparing for some of the most significant Melbourne transport and Eastern Freeway disruptions in years as construction accelerates across multiple major infrastructure projects.
Eastern Freeway will experience its first full weekend closure in decades when both directions shut between Doncaster and Tram roads from 10pm Friday 5 September to 5am Monday 8 September.
Crews will use this time to replace pedestrian bridges at Balwyn North and Doncaster as part of the North East Link project, with delays of up to 90 minutes expected.

West Gate Tunnel works will see all outbound lanes between Williamstown Road and Millers Road shut from 11:30pm Friday 29 August as teams complete asphalting, drainage and kerbing. Meanwhile, the M80 and Greensborough Bypass face a weekend shutdown from 7:30pm Friday 19 September to build the new interchange connecting to North East Link tunnels.
Train travellers face equally significant disruptions with buses replacing services on Cranbourne and Pakenham lines from Friday 29 August to Thursday 11 September for Metro Tunnel testing. Gippsland line passengers will need coaches from Friday 29 August to Friday 5 September, while Sunbury line sections shut Monday 8 September to Thursday 11 September.
Peninsula Link’s southbound closure from 10am Sunday 7 September to 10pm Thursday 18 October represents one of the longest disruptions, forcing all Rosebud-bound traffic onto alternative routes. Combined with ongoing level crossing removals in Melton, Newport, Dandenong, Altona, Mordialloc and Aspendale, the spring period promises widespread transport disruptions.
October brings a combined road and rail blitz in Greensborough, closing part of Grimshaw Street while buses replace Hurstbridge line trains to accommodate North East Link express lane construction.
